The misogyny blew right past me! I didn't even realize it before you pointed it out. The first book isn't my favorite of the series at all, but I could never really put my finger on why, besides Rook being the world's biggest asshole. The scheme his brother was running to 'tame' the dragon riders was pretty much done exactly the wrong way to give him any authority with them at all, BTW. ARGH, bad psychology; it burns!
The next one is better (though the East Asia in a blender this is a little odd), and the third one has two female protagonists. I'm not going to tell you you HAVE to run out and read the next one though! I can totally see why the writing choices would turn you off the series.
