Still playing AC4: Black Flag, writing pirate smut and enjoying myself immensely. Two links: Kate Beaton's 'Nemesis' pirate captain comics here and here and a link to a debate on ac characters and their motivations on reddit here
You know, I wish they took all the gameplay that actually WORKED in AC4, and had it in AC3. ALSO, someone should beat Ratonhnhaké:ton's actor over the head and tell him not to base his performance off Dances with Wolves. Ratonhnhaké:ton's story is this perfect storm of angst, and the shitty gameplay and dropped story lines (and the THREE HOURS before you meet him) just took away so much from the narrative.
*sigh*
At least Aveline got a good game, so they can't say people weren't connecting with a minority main chara.
RE: Motivations, Ratonhnhaké:ton and Kenway started out with positive goal in mind (do the thing) while Altair and Ezio had negative goals (un-do or make up for a thing.) I think you can tell how in the second two games just sort of wandered all over that the writers had a harder time figuring out the end point of the positive goals. And neither Ratonhnhaké:ton nor Kenway ended up with what they said they wanted at the beginning of the game!
Heh. I actually liked the motivation in AC4. It's money-pure and simple-just like in real life. The thing with Kenway is that got what he wanted at the start of the game half way through, and he got what he actually needed closer to the end.
True. I mean, yay for wanting utopia dude, but they don't tend to work out, ESP. when based on violence. The end bit where his daughter kept her wife's name and was like 'I ain't helping you' to the dude who gets it wrong was pretty neat imo. It's a hell of a stand to make in that time period, and it shows he's really all about social connections.
