Man, she must have A LOT of spoons to be so vigilant about talking out about sexism and racism. I mean, that's the first thing I though when I was going through her stuff, I'd never be able to expose myself to things that are that damaging on a daily basis and then explain why they are so terrible to others.
But then I saw that it's probably pretty disheartening to you as an author, since she is so ruthless about pointing out all these privileges. But everything she's saying here, all the isms and weaknesses of white, male dominated culture? None of that comes to mind when I think of your writing.
The world is filled with fascinating places, and you want to try to explore them, and you do so in a sensitive manner that's open to criticism. You do research! Lots of it! (I remember that post.) You changed a story when things were pointed out as not quite right! You're trying really hard not just to make a good story, but to be a sensitive to privilege. I get the feeling that requireshate isn't really expecting her work to change things. I think that's her place to blog about the idiots that aren't TRYING. You are trying, and I believe in that effort and goodwill.
Don't let her get you down. The problems she points out are things you are aware of, and as long as you keep trying in good faith and responding to criticism about -ims by saying "I'm sorry I got that wrong, how is it really?" instead of just dismissing people, you're doing alright.
*hugs* By all means, you don't need to read her posts. She's working with a hammer on others, and you're doing some delicate work with a scalpel on yourself.
I don't disagree with anything she's saying, but the manner is...rather abrasive, especially when taken in bulk. If anything, I think it detracts from the point she's trying to make, which is valid and God knows, badly needed, and shunts her into troll territory. The issue of cultural appropriation is something I'm thinking about a lot at the moment, so it kind of hit a nerve. Thanks for your thoughtful comment though-helped a lot :D
