not in nottingham
Jul. 24th, 2012 08:54 pmWhen we were kids in Nottingham, we used to visit the local urban park/museum/stately home, Wollaton Hall. It's a beautiful sandstone Elizabethan mansion with an impressive collection of stuffed animals and a large herd of rather homicidal red deer.
I was pleased when it got a major facelift a few years ago, and I was even happier to see the place doubling as Wayne Manor in The Dark Knight Rises. This isn't the first time Wollaton Hall's been used as a location; it's also the model for Lawrence's family home in Naomi Novik's Temeraire novels.
So if you're ever in Nottingham, Wollaton's worth a look. It's certainly more impressive than Nottingham Castle, although it would look far better if it hadn't been built on the backs of thousands of Nottinghamshire miners.
